New York: The Geological Institute of
America (GIA) recently put out an announcement inviting researchers to apply
for Postdoctoral Fellowships in Mineralogy, Materials Science and Gemmology.
Mumbai: India’s gold imports for 2016 are
estimated to be 492 tonnes in volume terms or about US$ 16-17 billion in value
terms, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters GFMS. The agency said that not
only does this represent a significant dip compared to the previous year, but
is also the lowest level they have reached since 2003.

Mumbai: The All India Gems & Jewellery
Trade Federation (GJF), a national trade federation for the promotion and
growth of trade in gems and jewellery across India, has appointed Mr. Nitin
Khandelwal as Chairman and Mr. Pramod Agarwal as Vice Chairman for a period of

The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council organised a seminar in
Mumbai on 5th January 2017 to create awareness about the benefits of cashless
transaction, income tax compliances, as well as on doing business in an
organised manner. The seminar was, especially organised for the non-members of
the Council who are doing business in an unorganised manner, but have played a
significant role by contributing to the success of the “Make in India”
initiative.

Diamond Company Limited posted a 147-percent jump on the year in production in
the December quarter.
Perth: Merlin
Diamonds said it recovered a 35.26-carat brown diamond at its Merlin mine in
Australia, the fifth-largest diamond in the country’s history.
The miner also
extracted a 14.6-carat brown diamond and a number of smaller white diamonds, it
reported.
Nördlingen
(Germany): Upon first glance, Nördlingen has all the hallmarks of a classic
German town. At its epicenter sits St.-Georgs-Kirche, a medieval church with an
imposing tower that dominates the skyline, which itself is punctuated by the
red pitched roofs of hundreds of timberframe homes and shops. But on closer
inspection, it’s these very buildings that set Nördlingen apart from other
towns, and for one very curious reason: These structures are embedded with
millions of microscopic diamonds.
Moscow:
Physicists from the Lomonosov Moscow State University have obtained
micrometer-sized diamond crystals in the form of a regular pyramid. In
cooperation with co-workers from other Russian and foreign research centers,
they have also studied the luminescence and electron emission properties of
these diamond crystals. The research results have been published in a series of
articles in journals including Scientific Reports.
