Mumbai: The Directorate of Revenue
Intelligence (DRI) has busted a major gold smuggling syndicate that used
passengers as mules, and arrested Farida Juzar Hajuri, a resident of Vasai (W),
from the international airport at Sahar for attempting to smuggle 6.053 kg of
gold worth Rs. 1.16 crore. The gold was concealed in bubble wrap on Hajuri’s
person, who arrived on Emirates flight EK502 from Dubai late on Friday, officials
said.

Beny Steinmetz was released from house arrest last week after he was detained
last month on suspicion of money laundering and bribing public officials in
Africa, writes The Times of Israel. The diamond and mining magnate was arrested
on December 19 and accused of paying millions of dollars in bribes in the
Republic of Guinea in exchange for advancing his business interests in the
country, according to the Israel Police.
Luanda: Diamond exports from Angola
declined by 8.45% during 2016, generating revenue of US$ 1.082 million as
against the US$ 1.182 million earned a year earlier, according to media reports.
Quoting statements by minister of Geology and Mining of Angola, Francisco
Queirós, the media said that the country produced 7.2 million carats during
2016 as compared to 8.394 million carats of rough during the earlier year.
Mumbai: Faced with a sharp decline in
exports owing to removal from the European Union's (EU's) preferential list,
Indian jewellers plan to woo buyers by introducing exclusive hand-crafted
designs into the market. In May, the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion
Council (GJEPC) would be organising a visit of around three dozen manufacturers
and exporters to the EU to help attract customers. Organisers would be
targeting importers from Britain, France, Belgium and Germany.
An increasing number of jewellers are
offering incentives to customers for purchases through cashless means such as
debit and credit cards, demand drafts and cheques, and payment modes like RTGS
and NEFT, as they gradually adapt to dwindling cash purchases in the wake of demonetisation
last month.
