friend, but it may also be a great companion for beer.
Gaborone: Botswana’s rough-diamond exports
bounced back last year after a plunge in 2015, helping the country return to
economic growth.
The nation shipped $4.02 billion of rough
in 2016, a jump of 54 percent, according to the Bank of Botswana.
Fourth-quarter exports leapt to $1 billion from $114.1 million a year earlier.

Exchange (SDiX) for establishing areas of cooperation. "We have signed an
MoU with SDiX, the world's first and only commodity exchange trading in
physically settled diamonds or establishing areas of cooperation, between the
two exchanges.
New York: The Diamond Empowerment Fund’s (DEF)
annual board meeting held last month elected Anna Martin President of its Board
of Directors. Martin is Senior Vice President Global Development and
Beneficiation for Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
New York: An 887-carat rough emerald will
come under the hammer in New York in April. Named “La Gloria,” the gem is one
of the largest museum-quality emeralds in the world, according to Guernsey’s,
which will auction the piece.
Hong Kong: Hong Kong’s jewellery and luxury
sales rose for the first time in more than two years as tourist numbers
increased and consumer sentiment improved.
Sales of jewellery, watches, clocks and valuable
gifts climbed 2.3 percent year on year to $1.06 billion (HKD 8.19 billion) in
December, according to provisional data from Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics
Department. The category had not seen an increase in revenue since September
2014, with every subsequent month recording a decline except October 2016, when
sales were flat.
Gaborone: Gem Diamonds will stop production
at the Ghaghoo mine in Botswana, effective immediately, due to a slump in
prices, the company said Thursday.
The miner has decided to place the asset on
“care and maintenance,” meaning it will put diamond recovery on hold but keep
managing the site until market conditions improve.
