Tracr,
the end-to-end diamond industry blockchain traceability platform being
developed by De Beers Group in collaboration with industry stakeholders, is
pleased to announce that Alrosa has joined the platform’s pilot programme.
Alrosa will join industry leaders from the diamond manufacturing and retail
sectors in creating the blockchain platform by the industry, for the industry.
Following
the announcement of the Tracr pilot earlier this year, Alrosa’s involvement brings
the world’s two largest diamond producers together to provide enhanced
assurance for consumers and trade participants about the provenance and
authenticity of their diamonds, and in creating a digital foundation for new
services that can only be developed on an end-to-end platform.
Petra
Diamonds Limited announces the appointment of Mrs Varda Shine and Mr Bernard
Pryor to its Board as Independent Non-Executive Directors, with effect from 1
January 2019.
These
appointments have been made in accordance with the Nomination Committee’s three
year Succession Plan which is in line with Petra’s development from a phase of
intensive capital expenditure and expansion to a focus on steady-state
operations.
Kagem
Mining has discovered an exceptionally rare high quality 5,655 carat (1.13kg)
emerald crystal at its mine in Lufwanyama. The emerald – dubbed ‘Inkalamu’, the
Lion Emerald - shows remarkable clarity with a perfectly balanced golden green
colour, and is already creating a buzz in the global gemstone industry ahead of
its auction in Singapore next month in November.
Inkalamu
was discovered at Kagem, the world’s largest emerald mine, which is 75% owned
by London-based Gemfields and 25% by the Zambian government through the
Industrial Development Corporation of Zambia. “The discovery of this
exceptional gemstone is such an important moment both for us and for the
emerald world in general” commented Gemfields’ London-based gemmologist Elena
Basaglia.

India’s
exports rose by 9.8%, in financial year 2017-18, which is the highest rate of
growth in six years. This positive growth in exports has taken place at a time
when there are a lot of negative headwinds globally. This was stated by Union
Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu, at the
Export Summit 2018 organised by Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi.
The
Minister further stated that Commerce Ministry is working on a strategy to
revitalize India’s exports and is working with key exporting ministries to
formulate sectoral, commodity and territory specific export strategy. Meetings
with concerned ministries have already been held where different ministries and
stakeholders have been consulted after which a matrix of specific action points

GIA
(Gemological Institute of America) announced today that Alrosa, the world’s
largest producer of rough diamonds, is piloting the Institute’s M2M program.
“The
M2M program is a way to share with the consumer the story of our diamonds,”
said Sergey Ivanov, CEO of Alrosa. “The creation of tracing systems is an
important step in confirming diamond provenance, which will have benefits for
industry participants, retailers and ultimately retail consumers. Alrosa is
examining different tracing solutions available on the market to provide
consumers with supreme confidence and knowledge.”

The
International Gemological Institute (IGI), the world’s largest independent
gemological institute, recently announced opening of a new facility in Mumbai
at the Bharat Diamond Bourse. Located at Tower FW in the exchange, the space
will serve as a welcomed extension of IGI’s existing laboratory services in the
capital city, operating as a full-fledged sorting and screening facility. Streamlining
the evaluation process, trade personnel will also be able to drop their parcels
at the fully operational office from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and collect them once the
certification process is complete.

The
Second World Emerald Symposium closed with overwhelming success in Bogota,
after three days of discussions on a variety of issues and challenges facing
the emerald industry along with informative talks on small-scale and industrial
mining, geology, gemology, origin, treatments, jewelry and more.
For
many of the speakers, the major and recurrent theme focused on the need for
responsible sourcing, transparency and an ethical supply chain, and how these
are being accomplished in different emerald-producing countries. “We believe
emeralds should really be green,” said Edwin Molina, President of Aprecol, the
Association of Colombian Emerald Producers, in his keynote address.
