Kagem Surveying Emerald Fields

Kagem Surveying Emerald Fields

The glamour of the red carpet at Cannes or Hollywood is a far cry from the hot and dusty pit of the world’s single largest producing emerald mine, Kagem in Lufwanyama. But for the team at the mine, the excitement of seeing Zambia’s emeralds on the world stage makes their job worthwhile.

For one of the mine’s longest serving employees, Senior Manager for Planning and Surveying, Aaron Nyangu, it is the culmination of years of training, experience and hard work that he is now passing on to the next generation of mining engineers. “I feel proud to see those celebrities wearing our emeralds from Kagem. It’s a great feeling,” said Mr Nyangu enthusiastically.

Sarine Improved Profitability in Q3

Sarine Improved Profitability in Q3

Sarine announced its financial results for the third quarter and nine months ended 30 September 2018. According to the review, as in prior years, demand for capital equipment by diamond manufacturers slowed in Q3.

In addition to this cyclicality, industry sentiments in Q3 2018 were affected by a number of macroeconomic factors, including uncertainties surrounding the impact of trade tariffs on China, credit tightening by Indian banks, increased volatility in foreign exchange rates and uncertainties relating to the long-term effects of the advent of lab-grown diamonds (LGD) into the market.

Solely Automation could not work!

Solely Automation could not work!

Automation in gem-n-jewellery industry & through pipeline requires adequate management of 70% & 30% adoption of the technology including mining. While automation is often seen as silver bullets that can solve a range of mining’s problems, for Roy Hill’s Christine Eriksen automation is actually a holistic approach with the majority of the time, effort and funds to be invested in changing in the people working with the technology on the frontline.

“You realised that silver bullet approach solely based on technology wasn’t going to work. That’s why Roy Hill has developed System Thinking,” said the General Manager Improvement & Smart Business during her “What's happened since we embraced smart mining into our operations case study” presentation at International Mining and Resources Conference in Melbourne.

A Bionic Eye Closer to 3D printer Reality

A Bionic Eye Closer to 3D printer Reality

The dream of producing a bionic eye has taken a step closer thanks to silver. The challenge of making such a prosthetic has always been to layer light-sensitive materials onto an orb without the distortion inherent in placing two-dimensional objects even thin ones like wires onto a rounded surface.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota claim to be the first to use a 3D printer to overlay light receptors on a hemispherical glass surface. Michael McAlpine, a coauthor of the study 3D Printed Polymer Photo detectors and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, said in prepared remarks: “Bionic eyes are usually thought of as science fiction, but now we are closer than ever using a multi-material 3D printer.”
