Sierra Leone cancelled the mining licence

The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources, Sierra Leone, hereby informs the general public that Government has cancelled the mining licence of SL Mining Limited, ML 01/2017, for several breaches contrary to the Mines and Minerals Act of 2009, and the Mining Lease Agreement of 2017 between the Government of Sierra Leone and SL Mining Limited.

In spite of several requests made to SL Mining to remedy the breaches, and several meetings directed at enlisting the company’s compliance with the Mines and Minerals Act, 2009, and the Mining Lease Agreement of 2017, SL Mining failed, refused and remained unwilling to remedy the breaches and comply with the terms of the Act and the Agreement.

The situation was further compounded by the company’s deliberate act of putting the mines into care and maintenance against the advice of Government. In view of SL Mining’s inability and unwillingness to remedy the breaches for a period in excess of ninety (90) days, Government has cancelled the SL Mining Limited Mining Licence, ML 01/2017.

Meanwhile, Government is taking steps to ensure that SL Mining meets all outstanding liabilities to employees and local suppliers/creditors. The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources hereby assures the public of its commitment to ensure that all Sierra Leoneans derive maximum benefits from our mineral resources.
