The market is hungry for a change in practice!

Last year, a select group of Fine Jewellery designers was challenged by Vogue Italia to fashion one-of-a-kind pieces from an unlikely sustainable material. The results-exhibited and sold for charity at an event called The Protagonist in New York - were a clarion call for a more ethically aware industry.

This year, The Protagonist curated by Vogue Italia is back, with responsibly sourced fine jewellery crafted by fourteen designers which will be showcased at an exclusive event at Christie's in New York on December 10.

‘I believe that the market is hungry for a change in practice’ says The Protagonist creative director, Alexandra Mor. As a fine jewellery designer, MOR is well-placed to understand the business, one that is responding to people’s concerns about dirty gold, elephant Ivory and blood diamonds.

It was her idea, last year, to invite designers to work with (Tagua Seed, the) botanical alternative to Ivory. (This year,) for MOR’s own creations, the designer has worked with wild Tagua Seed from Ecuador and Emeralds from the Muzo mine in Columbia.

‘They are committed to improving the living conditions of the miners, their families and the local community. The Muzo mine prides itself on complete transparency from mine to market, thanks to pristine levels of traceability and rock-solid health and safety, environmental and social responsibility’ she says.
