Color greatly affects the price of each colored stone. Thus, the market has a strong requirement for labeling colored stones with trade names such as Pigeon Blood Ruby, Royal Blue, and Cornflower Blue Sapphires in identification reports.
To cater to the demands of the market, the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) or GIT has issued a comprehensive colored stone standard, from color, cleanliness to cut as a guideline for users to benchmark the quality of colored stones, a useful tool for creating confidence and fairness for local and international manufacturers and consumers alike.
GIT Colors Standards Master is the result of continuous research conducted by GIT which was initiated in1999 to determine and label colored stones in the market through studies of existing documents before the definition and boundaries of each color is determined.
Then, sample colored stones with standard colors are used to survey the opinions of professionals in the gems industry locally and internationally: from manufacturers, traders, academics to consumers. The survey results are analyzed to determine the acceptable labeling of each color, and GIT converted the values of each color into real colored stones to be used as the GIT Colors Standards Master.
GIT has publicized the Colors Standards Master of ruby and sapphire which are popular colored stones from Thailand with the aim to raise awareness of these standards that have since been widely recognized. Furthermore, in 2014 the Ruby Colors Standards Master received the Prime Minister’s Best Product Award from the Ministry of Industry.
