Perth: Merlin Diamonds recovered two pink diamonds at its mine in Australia’s Northern Territory, the company said Monday.
While extremely small at 0.039 carats and 0.025 carats, the rough stones indicate the possibility of finding further pink diamonds at the Merlin mine, according to a statement by the company. The miner discovered a 0.70-carat pink diamond earlier this year — the project’s first diamond of that color — and has previously found diamonds in green, blue and brown.
Merlin Diamonds, formerly North Australian Diamonds, acquired the Merlin mine from Rio Tinto in 2004. Australia’s largest diamond, a 104.73-carat stone, was recovered at the mine.
Australia is a major source of colored diamonds, with Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine in Western Australia accounting for more than 90% of the world’s supply of pink diamonds.
