De Beers Opens First Store in New York
New York: De Beers Diamond Jewellers
unveiled its flagship New York store, in which it features rough diamonds to
give customers a better sense of the finished product’s origin.
To mark the occasion, the jewelry retailer
displayed a 109-carat, type-IIa rough diamond at the store, which covers 200
square meters on Manhattan’s Madison Avenue.
“To have a beautiful polished diamond you
have to start with a beautiful rough,” said François Delage, chief executive
officer of De Beers Diamond Jewellers, in a TV interview with Bloomberg. “This
is really where our expertise lies, and we wanted our potential clients to be
able to experience what it is to touch and feel beautiful rough.”
The store is De Beers fourth jewelry outlet
in the U.S. and its first standalone location in New York. Its other outlet in
the city opened in 2005 inside the Saks Fifth Avenue department store.
“We felt it was the right moment for us to
offer to our client an experience which was more in line with what they were
looking for – something which is a bit more intimate, a bit more exclusive,” Delage
added. “We saw that the premises on Madison Avenue were probably more fitting
with what the brand was about and standing for.”
De Beers Diamond Jewellers, a London-based
joint venture between De Beers and LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, reported revenue
grew 3 percent to $161.3 million in 2015 as sales of high jewelry improved
strongly. Apart from the U.S., the brand has two stores in Canada, seven
locations in Europe, three in the Middle East and 17 in Asia. Its business in
China – where it has five outlets – is “growing double-digit,” Delage said.

Jewellery Sales Picking up in India
Mumbai: Jewellery sales in India are
gradually picking up momentum with consumers visiting retail stores to take
advantage of the fall in gold prices, reports Business Standard.
Consequently, there has been a sharp
increase in consumer footfall over the past two weeks as buyers are getting
habituated with cashless transactions. Since cash transactions contributed
nearly half of the jewellery sector's turnover, the complete shift to cashless
transactions is expected to take at least a year with buyers in remote areas
requiring a bank account, debit cards and proper training to initiate cashless
transactions.
Consumers in urban areas, however, have
started using cards and online fund transfers for jewellery purchases.
"Buyers have started gradually coming
in. Sales have begun gradually picking up. But it will take sometime for
restoring jewellery sales to the pre-demonetisation level. Online transaction
is a smooth experience which requires no human intervention for counting,
accepting, depositing in the bank etc. Online transactions are completed in a
few seconds without any error or omission. The moment we get the message of
fund transfer, we deliver the jewellery," said Kumar Jain, director,
Umedmal Tilokchand Zaveri, a bullion dealer and jewellery retailer in Zaveri
Bazaar.
In short, jewellery sales have recovered
half of their losses since demonetisation in the past two weeks.
"Cash transaction has disappeared. But,
consumers used to card transactions are coming back to jewellery stores. We are
witnessing a turnaround in consumers turnouts since December," said Ashok
Minawala, director, All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation.
