Gaborone: De Beers’ rough diamond
production leaped 10 percent to 7.8 million carats during the fourth quarter of
2016 compared with 7.1 million carats, a year earlier, when production was
reduced in response to trading conditions, Anglo American said.
Antwerp: The World Diamond Mark (WDM)
seminars, to be held during BrilliAnt, the Antwerp Diamond Trade Fair, will
present the two main elements of the WDM programmes that aim to drive consumer
traffic to the participating retail jewellers.
Singapore: The Singapore International
Jewellery Expo (SIJE) 2017 will be held at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, on 6 -
9 July 2017. Featuring more than 200
exhibitors from 25 countries, the expo will showcase exquisite jewellery from
manufacturers and designers from all over the world.
New York: U.S. retailers are under threat
of having no option but to close their stores and move their business to the
Internet, write Lindsey Rupp and Molly Smith for BloombergMarkets. In the last
18 months, over 5,000 stores have closed their doors, with an additional 10% of
all U.S. retail spaces being forced to repurpose or close down altogether.
Although consumer spending this holiday season (Nov-Dec) increased overall by
4% to $658.3 billion, ending slightly higher than earlier projections, this can
be attributed to deep discounts and online purchases.
Lucara Diamond Corp. has appointed Moolman
Mining Botswana (Pty) Ltd (Aveng Moolmans) as its new mining contractor at the
Karowe diamond mine in Botswana.
Moscow: ALROSA said it expects
rough-diamond production to increase significantly this year amid optimism in
the rough market.
The miner anticipates it will recover 39.2
million carats in 2017, the company said in a presentation to investors,
implying a rise of 6 percent over the 37 million carats that were planned for
2016.
Johannesburg: Blom Diamonds, a cutting and
polishing firm owned by senior industry figure Ernie Blom, has agreed to be
acquired by Australia’s Tychean Resources for up to $4.1 million (AUD 5.5 million).
Ramat Gan: The Hong Kong Jewellery Manufacturers’
Association (HKJMA) is sending a special delegation of young manufacturers to
the sixth International Diamond Week in Israel (IDWI) to be held February 13 –
16, 2017. The delegation, which will be led by HKJMA Chairman Adam Lau, will
include Deputy Chairman Peter Lam, Executive Joe Lee and head of the Youth
Committee Kevin Ng, as well as a number of younger manufacturers.

according to Vasily Zakharov, the first deputy minister of Industry and Geology
