D.E.F. Bestows Diamonds Do Good Awards
Las Vegas: On the eve of the opening of the
world’s largest diamond and jewellery trade show, JCK Las Vegas, the Diamond
Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.) raised over $1,060,000 to provide scholarships and
assistance to empower young people globally.
Anna Martin, D.E.F President and V.P Global Development and
Beneficiation, GIA, said: “This event symbolizes the collective good the
diamond and jewellery industry continues to do in communities around the world
where they do business. Not enough consumers are aware of this positive fact.”
$13 Boot Sale Diamond Ring Sold for $700,000
London: A ring that was originally
purchased in the 1980s from a car boot sale for £10 ($13) under the assumption
that it was a decorative costume jewel, today went under the hammer at
Sotheby's Fine Jewels auction in London for $700,000 (£540,000), hammer price.
It was only in the past few months that the owner decided to see if the ring
had any value and asked Sotheby's to appraise it. Much to the owner's surprise,
the ring turned out to be a genuine cushion-shaped diamond weighing 26.29
carats with an attractive color grade of I and impressive clarity grade of VVS2,
dating from the 19th Century.
Gaetano Cavalieri Joins Fijian Delegation at UN Con.
New York: Gaetano Cavalieri, the President
of CIBJO, has joined a high-level delegation from the Republic of Fiji, led by
the country's Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, at the Oceans Conference at
the United Nations in New York, to outline and promote the development of a
sustainable pearl farming sector in Fiji. The project will work to fulfil UN
Sustainable Development Goal 14, relating to the health of the oceans, seas and
marine environments, as well as provide sustainable economic and sustainable
opportunities for the country's citizens.

Perth: Rio Tinto and The Perth Mint have
showcased a A$1.8 million one-of-a-kind coin collection featuring three
coloured diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine.
Dominion Consolidates Ownership in Ekati
Toronto: Dominion Diamond Corporation has
signed an agreement with Archon Minerals Limited to convert Archon's joint
venture interest in the Buffer Zone Joint Venture at the Ekati diamond mine in
Canada's Northwest Territories to a royalty equal to 2.3 percent of all future
gross revenue from diamonds produced from the Buffer Zone.
IIDGR Unveils SYNTHdetect Device
Las Vegas: The International Institute of
Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR), a De Beers Group company, yesterday
unveiled SYNTHdetect – the first synthetic
screening device in the industry to test multiple stones in set jewellery at
once without the need for a probe. It also has the industry’s lowest referral
rate at around 0.05 per cent.
