De Beers produces 8.5 mn cts in 1Q
Anglo
American reports rough diamond production increased by 15% to 8.5 million
carats in the first quarter of 2018, compared to the same period of 2017. Reflecting
the ramp-up of production from Gahcho Kué in Canada, which reached nameplate
capacity in Q2 2017 and increased production from Orapa in Botswana (Debswana)
in response to the sustained healthy trading conditions.
Botswana
(Debswana) production increased by 12% to 5.8 million carats. Orapa production
increased by 26% to 2.8 million carats mainly due to an increase in tonnes
treated in response to sustained healthy trading conditions.
Namibia
(Namdeb Holdings) production increased by 12% to 0.5 million carats as a result
of accessing consistently higher grades at the land based operations.
Gold tracks the dollar
Update 1: According to Investment Update by world
gold council, investors often use the direction of the US dollar as
a bellwether for gold’s performance. However, over recent years, short-term
movements in gold have been more heavily influenced by US interest rates and
expectations of policy normalisation.
Our
analysis shows that the correlation between gold and US rates is waning and
that the US dollar is again a stronger indicator of the direction of price.
And, in our view, this will continue over coming months – even while the dollar
won’t explain gold’s movements entirely. Furthermore, the analysis shows that
higher real rates have not always resulted in negative gold returns.

Production down by 17% at Alrosa 1Q
Alrosa
Group’s diamond production for Q1 2018 totalled 7.4 million carats, down by 17%
year-on-year. “The key factors behind the decline were reduced production at
the Mirny Division, which was caused by the shutdown of the Mir underground
mine following the August 2017 accident, processing of lower grade ore from the
Jubilee pipe and termination of processing of ore from the Udachny open-pit
after open-pit mining there was completed.

responsibly
sourced Zambian emeralds!
For
centuries people have linked the month of their birth with a particular
gemstone, and May has traditionally been associated with emeralds. Highlighting
the significance of emeralds this May are leading coloured gemstone supplier
Gemfields, which operate the world's single largest producing emerald mine
Kagem, in Lufwanyama, in partnership with the Zambian government.
“The
emerald takes its name from the Greek word ‘smáragdos' meaning ‘green stone’,
which symbolizes life and force of the cosmos, strength and inner bliss, in
Central America it was a fertility token,” explains independent jewellery
expert Joanna Hardy. “The colour green has always been associated with rebirth,
renewal, youth, hope, nature and paradise and so emerald has been a revered
stone for centuries.”
