Signet Jewelers Completes SOC Portfolio
Signet
Jewelers Limited announced the completion of the final phase of its strategic
outsourcing of credit (SOC) through the sale of its existing non-prime
receivables and implementation of a forward flow purchase arrangement for
future non-prime receivables with funds managed by CarVal Investors and
Castlelake, L.P.
With
the closing of this transaction, Signet has transitioned to a fully outsourced
credit structure while maintaining a full spectrum of category-leading
financing and lease options for consumers. The outsourced credit structure
allows the company to enhance its strategic and operational focus on its core
jewelry retail business as it executes the Signet Path to Brilliance
transformation plan.

SA to finalise Mining Charter soon
South
Africa is likely to finalise its draft Mining Charter towards the end of the
year, Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe said on Sunday. “Our view is
that by October, November we must have a Charter in place,” said Mantashe.
Addressing
a media briefing at the end of a two-day Summit on the Mining Charter, Mantashe
said the draft Charter which was published on 15 June will be in place towards
the end of the year. At the publishing of the Charter in June, the Department
of Mineral Resources (DMR) said the public has until 27 July 2018 to submit
their comments on the draft before it is finalised and gazetted.
Qatar Pearl Exhibition in Moscow
A
new edition of the critically acclaimed Pearls: Treasures from the Seas and the
Rivers exhibition will open in Moscow on July 11th as part of the Qatar Russia
2018 Year of Culture.
The
exhibition was curated specifically for this year’s Year of Culture programme
and will display over 100 pieces of jewellery and other examples of pearl
craftsmanship made from freshwater pearls born in Central Asia, 50 of which are
new, never-before-shown artifacts.
GIA Collaborates with Princeton University
Scientists
at Princeton University called on GIA’s (Gemological Institute of America)
expertise in gemological research and the analysis of optical centers to
evaluate how to use the unique properties of diamonds to create a highly secure
communications network.
The
research, published in the July 6, 2018 issue of Science magazine, examined how
color centers created by replacing two carbon atoms with one silicon atom in
the crystal lattice of a synthetic diamond could be used to store and
retransmit information in a quantum communications network, that would allow
for the transmission of information between physically separated processors.
Poor market pushed gold by 4.2% in June
According
to the World Gold Council, Holdings in global gold-backed ETFs and similar
products fell by 49.3t to 2,434t in June, pushing assets under management (AUM)
in US dollars down by 2.1% relative to May. Investors seemed to shrug off poor
equity market performance and escalating global trade tensions, pushing the
gold price down by 4.2% in June.
ETF
outflows were dominated by North American funds, losing US$1.9bn in the face of
US dollar strength and a declining gold price, while funds listed in Asia and
other regions lost US$149mn and US$89mn respectively. Europe saw marginal
inflows during the month, with gold holdings increasing fractionally by
US$52mn.

First meeting of e-Commerce Task Force held
Commerce
Secretary, Rita Teaotia, chaired the first meeting of the Task Force on
e-commerce in New Delhi on July 6. The meeting deliberated upon the suggestions
emerging from the sub-group meetings held during 20th – 22nd June, 2018, 2018.
The suggestions were on wide ranging issues such as cross border data flows,
taxation, trade facilitation and logistics, consumer confidence, IPR and future
tech, FDI and competition issues.
The
sub-groups saw participation from various ministries and departments, high
level representatives from the industry bodies, e-commerce companies,
telecommunication and IT companies and independent experts. It was decided to
set up a Task Force in the first meeting of the Think Tank, on the framework
for national policy on e-commerce, held on 24th April 2018, under the
chairmanship of Suresh Prabhu, Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil
Aviation.
