Young can play an important role in global crisis!

In the recent video conference was chaired by the Croatian Minister for Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy, Vesna Bedeković, with participation of the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Ms Mariya Gabriel, as well as Ministers and representatives of EU Member States. 

 

Ministers discussed the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic felt by all sectors, especially the youth sector in relation to mobility, youth programs and youth activities, access of young people to services and employment, the overall wellbeing of young people and youth participation in decision-making. 

 

The introductory part of the videoconference was attended by the Vice-President of the European Youth Forum, Mr. Villa Majamaa, who presented the perspective of young people in relation to the topic of discussion.

 

“Within its Presidency priorities, Croatia has paid special attention to young people. I am convinced that young people can play an important role in risk mitigation in these challenging times. This crisis can be redirected into a challenge and offer young people the opportunity to contribute with their creativity, enthusiasm, effort and innovative ideas."

 

Vesna Bedeković, Minister for Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy Measures and policies to be taken at national and European level in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic were also discussed. Ministers agreed that the pandemic had a significant impact on the lives of young people and that this issue is of great importance to all EU Member States.

 

It was also pointed out that young people are important stakeholders in mitigating the risks of the global crisis caused by the pandemic. The discussion also highlighted the need for further cooperation, with an emphasis on disseminating information, exchanging best experiences and practices, as well as on networking.

 

“Despite the challenges that young people face today, many young people and organizations carry out various volunteer activities, thus showing solidarity and helping to those in need. It is important to find models that will support youth organizations and their further work but will also continue to encourage them to work for the benefit of the community. In order to find an appropriate answer, now is the right time to act decisively." Vesna Bedeković, Minister for Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy.

 

Finally, the Croatian Presidency used the opportunity to thank all Member States for their continued support and contribution which were crucial for the Presidency to continue its work, in particular with regard to the finalization of the Council Conclusions on raising opportunities for young people in rural and remote areas that will be adopted through written procedure.
