Opportunity about Zambian emeralds

Responsibly sourced emeralds from the Lufwanyama-based Kagem mine - which is 25% owned by the Zambian government through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), in partnership with London-based Gemfields - are among those featured in some of the courses.

 

Joanna Hardy recently launched her Foundation Jewellery Course, consisting of eight one-hour videos, which introduce the main gemstones, delving into their history and following their journey from mine to market. There’s even an online classroom in which to share notes with fellow classmates.

Thailand’s AIGS gemmology school is offering free webinars, “to fight Covid-19 boredom”, with topics including everything from gem identification to coloured gemstone grading and pricing. The Guild Institute of Gemology Education, China’s most trusted source of knowledge in this area, is harnessing the power of WeChat (which has over 1bn users) to offer e-learning.

 

With a focus on coloured gemstones, modules encompass ruby, sapphire and emerald identification, evaluation and appreciation, with a special ruby master class developed with experts at Gemfields. Gem-A – the Gemmological Institute of Great Britain – is running online gemmology foundation courses.

 

As the longest established provider of gem and jewellery education, their courses are taught in seven languages and in 26 countries around the world; they cover identification, value and treatments, among other topics, all crucial knowledge for anyone hoping to be a buyer or a collector.

 

 The Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand offers distance learning as standard, with everything from diploma courses to specialised learning on offer, covering everything from diamond-grading to jewellery design. Gübelin Gem Lab has launched a series of online lectures about the world of coloured gemstones, to give something back to the community and provide an accessible service for people during these challenging times.

 

The International Coloured Gemstone Association, ICA, is offering up a series of webinars to keep its gem and jewellery enthusiast members engaged while we face the challenges of COVID-19. So far, these have looked at subjects like field gemmology, the history of rubies and coloured diamonds, with more to follow. The ICA website also has tips for getting through this crisis.
