Strengthening businesses between HK & India
Hong Kong and India have enjoyed robust bilateral trade relations covering a range of products and services over the years and these ties are set to become even more deeply entrenched in the future, according to Rajesh Bhagat, Consultant, Mumbai of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). Meeting with the media in Mumbai today, Mr Bhagat reassured Indian business communities that Hong Kong remains an effective platform for global business.
The HKTDC’s large-scale fairs and conferences are proceeding as planned despite the social unrest seen in the city in recent months. Eighteen fairs ran smoothly from July to November, attracting 14,700 exhibitors and close to 222,000 buyers from around the world. Mr Bhagat said safety is a top priority at all HKTDC-organised events, with special security measures put in place to respond to different situations. The HKTDC continues to monitor developments and communicate closely with exhibitors, buyers and conference delegates from around the world.
Adding to Hong Kong’s business advantages, the HKTDC gathers the latest market intelligence and helps form partnerships with different countries to develop business opportunities for enterprises. The HKTDC organises more than 30 exhibitions in Hong Kong every year. Eleven of them are the largest marketplaces of their kind in Asia, of which electronics, jewellery, gifts, watches & clocks and lighting are the world’s largest.
Five international trade fairs will be held early next year in Hong Kong, which will offer ideal platforms for buyers and suppliers from India to expand their businesses into new markets.
These fairs are:
1: HKTDC Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair (6-9 January 2020)
2: HKTDC Hong Kong Baby Products Fair (6-9 January 2020)
3: Hong Kong International Stationery Fair (6-9 January2020)
4: HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show
(2-6 March 2020)
5: HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show (4-8 March 2020)
“The HKTDC’s fairs attracted over 39,000 exhibitors and over 770,000 visitors from all over the world in 2018/2019,” Mr Bhagat said. He looks forward to welcoming more manufactures and exporters in India to explore business opportunities and tap into global markets through HKTDC exhibitions. He also encourages all buyers, distributors and retailers from India to come to Hong Kong for sourcing.
India is Hong Kong’s 7th largest trading partner. In the first three quarters of 2019, the total trade value between the two places reached close to USD 19 billion. In which, India was Hong Kong’s 4th major export market with a total export value of over USD 11 million and 9th largest import source with an import value of over USD 7 billion.
