Gemewizard’s view on gem colors and pricing
Recently, we identified a dramatic change in the effect of brownish and Brown moderators on the price of pink colored diamonds. The info, drawn from Gemewizard's big data auto analysis, over $350 million, and market research of fancy colored diamonds, was an eye opener.
The negative effect of a brownish moderator has been known for years. Any trader knows that a brownish shade reduces prices of pink diamonds by about -50%. In the past couple of years, as our analysis shows, the tendency has intensified becoming closer to -70 to -80%. And the stronger Brown moderator now reduces the price by 80-90%!
For example, a one carat straight fancy pink diamond, with a VS clarity grade, is currently offered at about $124,000 per carat, whereas, a brownish Pink diamond with the same properties is offered at $31,000 and a Fancy Brown Pink at just $15-20,000.
It seems that the market is ready to accept the existence of brown moderators in pink diamonds only at substantial discounts. Therefore, our conclusion and tip for you: If you send your colored diamonds to an expert gem lab, such as GIA or GWLAB, for grading analysis, you should pray rigorously that they don’t find even the slightest hint of Brown in your pinks!!! The result, translated to value, could be VERY unpleasant..!
